Skills for Success

Course Description:

Skills for Success is designed to build a student’s educational toolbox in which he/she can access for the short-term as well as long-term. Each student will learn note-taking skills, test preparation, develop study plans, discover learning styles, find resources for core classes, understand how to effectively use the internet, and ultimately create a portfolio of work. Skills for Success is developed with the intention of allowing students to explore skills and habits that will be beneficial for the entirety of the student’s school experience.

  • Final Exam Preparation

Students will develop skills in the areas of:

  • Note taking
  • Time management
  • Learning styles
  • Homework consistency
  • Identifying Math resources
  • Identifying Science resources
  • Identifying Social Studies resources
  • Identifying English resources
  • Learning how to effectively access the internet
  • Researching peer-reviewed journals
  • Creating a digital portfolio
  • Coping techniques for homework/test anxiety
  • Applying skills to review for final exams

This course upholds the KAS mission statement by:

•    Strengthening student character in empowering students to commit to his/her own learning.  
•    Relying on a student-centered inquiry-based program to foster an attitude of discovery, in which students find and utilize resources with the goal of building a foundation for independent learning.
•    Invoking self-discipline in being hands-on throughout the learning process.
•    Allowing students to break down their learning styles by consciously focusing on rebuilding what works best for them and translating this into a positive self-image.


 

Study Skills

Course Description:

This class covers a variety of skills and is designed for students who need motivation to study in a more independent manner. Study skills including different reading and writing techniques for a variety of required levels.

  • Ability to set attainable goals,
  • Increase concentration and class awareness
  • Note-taking, organizational skills
  • Completion of assignments
  • Summary writing and essay writing skills
  • Grammar practice, reading comprehension

Students will be able to:

  • Take better notes
  • Become more organized
  • Be motivated for independent work and completing individual assignments
  • Improve their writing skills via summary writing, and essay writing skills
  • Practice grammar practice and reading comprehension
  • Analyze writing, discussions and group projects
  • Understand the basic components of an essay
