Grade 6 Visual Arts Curriculum

Course Description:

The Middle School Visual Arts program is designed to give students the opportunity to gain confidence in producing art, to reinforce artistic skills, and to introduce how art can be a great way for self-expression. Students strengthen their abilities to self assess choices and adjustments when planning and creating their art. A variety of materials and techniques are used in creating artwork. The students also learn how to organize their compositions and ideas of their artwork.

Units:

  • Introduction to art class
  • Self-portrait painting.
  • Mural painting.
  • Surrealism
  • Pinch pot vessels.

Skills and Understandings:

Students will develop a better understanding of:

  • How to use a grid transfer technique.
  • How to manipulate acrylic paint to create interesting brush strokes.
  • How to work as a team to create a mural painting.
  • How to make a surrealistic landscape.

Grade 7 Visual Arts Curriculum

Course Description:

  • Radial design and symmetry.
  • Clay Hahoe Masks.
  • Advertising and computer skills
  • Still life painting.

Skills and Understandings:

Students will gain a better understanding of:

  • How to create radial design.
  • How to create a mask that is influenced by emotions.
  • How to create a successful advertising poster and commercial.
  • How to capture the perspective, proportions, and depth of still life in a painting.

Grade 8 Visual Arts Curriculum

  • Pencil shading project
  • Slab vessels to create clay reliefs
  • Mosaic
  • Silhouette painting
  • Still life drawing

Skills and Understandings:

Students will gain a better understanding of:

  • How art has been used for propaganda throughout history.
  • How to use different pencil shades in an artwork.
  • Mosaics and how can we create a Mosaic painting.
  • How to create clay reliefs.
  • How to create a silhouette in the foreground/middle ground
