Language Arts Curriculum

The goal of our Elementary grades Language Arts instructional program at Khartoum American school is to develop lifelong readers and writers and to develop and reinforce the literacy learning that begins in a child’s home and community. We believe that competency in the areas of reading and writing increases overall motivation to achieve.

The foundation for our balanced literacy program is built upon a framework for teaching, learning, and assessing at all grade levels using the AERO standards and performance indicators. These standards emphasize a balanced literacy approach in the key areas of:

  • Reading,
  • Writing,
  • Listening and speaking
  • Viewing and presenting.

Through a wide range of assessments, our curriculum encourages the consistent growth of critical and creative thinking, quality communication, independence and reflection at developmentally appropriate levels.

At Khartoum American school we advocate a student-centered, collaborative and cross- curricular approach in support of balanced literacy. We acknowledge the children’s diverse development and natural disposition to learn. In response, we differentiate our instruction to make learning experiences accessible and engaging. We believe that such an approach, further strengthened by a strong home-school connection, will empower our students to flourish as competent, compassionate, and effective communicators in the 21st century.
